Home to leading foundries, IC manufacturers, and design houses, Taiwan is one of the world’s largest producers of semiconductor chips. Back in 1992 – long before Taiwan became the semiconductor industry powerhouse it is today – Lam Research Taiwan (LRT) was founded. Located in Hsinchu, that first office handled sales and provided customer support for the region with fewer than 20 employees. Keeping pace with the growth of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, LRT has since expanded to six locations (Linkou, Hsinchu, Taichung, Houli, Tainan, and Kaohsuing), employs more than 600 people, and contributes about 20% – 25% of Lam’s annual revenue.
Lam’s Taiwan offices support foundry, memory, and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) companies. LRT plays an important role in helping these customers adopt new technologies, an effort that is challenging and risky, yet rewarding. The region has proven to be quite adept at tackling those challenges, collaborating closely with customers locally and partnering with our product and support groups based in the U.S. In fact, we have been recognized frequently by customers for our successes. For example, several supplier awards recently given to Lam were largely the result of LRT’s efforts.
Given LRT’s strong customer and technology focus, our employees generally view the work environment as fast-paced, dynamic, and challenging, yet supportive and highly motivating. In a recent blog story, new college graduates (NCGs) working at LRT shared what they liked best about Lam and their jobs, such as using their “understanding of technology to find a solution” and having “opportunity to work with people from different countries and cultures.” Many also said they had joined Lam because of the career opportunities and the chance to work for an industry and technology leader.
LRT supports those career goals and training needs with a wide range of programs. For example, seasoned employees act as “buddies” to help those who are new to the company feel welcomed and to provide a safe place to ask questions. Engineers, the largest group at LRT, have easy access to technical certification training at our Asia Pacific Training Center in Taiwan. They also have the opportunity to be assigned to other countries to broaden their experience. In addition, LRT offers numerous job skills and management training programs for employees.
As hard as our LRT team members work, they still make time for their community, participating in disaster relief programs and “Lam Cares” activities during the holiday season. Most of them are also active in company-organized programs, from sports and special-interest clubs to parties and annual outings. No wonder our LRT team is so highly regarded by its peers and customers around the globe.
