The forecast was cloudy with a chance of a storm, yet despite the weather, nearly 1,100 runners showed up to participate in the second annual Lam Research Heart and Soles 5K event on February 7, 2015, and helped raise money to provide salad bars for local schools. When the results came in, we were able to fund 64 salad bars serving 42,000 students in 65 schools. By bringing more fruits and vegetables into local schools’ lunches and giving K-12 students healthy food choices, we encourage children to develop good eating habits, reducing their risk to many diseases.
The efforts and contributions of all the participants, volunteers, organizers, and sponsors helped make this family-oriented fun run a successful event. The race, held in San Jose, California, brought together nearly 1,600 registrants – a 78% increase over last year – with ages ranging from 1 to 76. All runners received a Hearts & Soles 5K logo participation medal, with the top three leaders in each age category receiving special recognition and placement medals during the awards ceremony. The overall first-place finisher clocked in at just under 15 minutes for the 3.1 mile race.
Whether you choose to run, walk, or even hula hoop your way to the finish line, contributing to a worthy cause is a great reason to race. Check out the photos below to see how much fun everyone had at this year’s event. You can also click on the video to view highlights from the 2014 inaugural race.
